Latin American Program in the News: Obama da un vuelco comercial a su relación con América Latina

Director Cynthia J. Arnson commented on the deepening economic relations between the United States and Latin America, a region that is being seen by Washington as a vital economic partner instead of its natural "backyard." (In Spanish)

Las estadísticas demuestran que América Latina es un continente en crecimiento. La Comisión Económica para América Latina y el Caribe (Cepal) pronosticó una subida del Producto Interior Bruto del 3.5% en la región. México crecerá ese mismo porcentaje, impulsado por la economía estadounidense. De acuerdo con los analistas, EU podría participar en este crecimiento, con los nuevos pactos comerciales que surgen en la región, como la Alianza del Pacífico, que incluye a Chile, Perú, Colombia y México, y que pone su mirada en Asia, otro punto de crecimiento mundial.

“Debajo de todo, está el convencimiento de que el incremento en las exportaciones y la profundización de las relaciones con la región serán la clave para el crecimiento económico de Estados Unidos y su competitividad a largo plazo”, dijo Cindy Arnson, directora para América Latina del Woodrow Wilson Center, una organización con sede en Washington. “Es cierto que el senador John Kerry, actual secretario de Estado, se equivocó al referirse a la región como el patio trasero estadounidense. Pero esa mirada significa la intención de mantener relaciones más cercanas y productivas con la región, algo cuya necesidad es obvia para Estados Unidos”.
