Commenting on Nicolás Maduro's announcement last week expelling two U.S. military attaches from Venezula, after months of disuccsions designed to improve U.S.-Venezuela relations, Director Cynthia Arnson was quoted in La Tercera: 

"That was a bucket of cold water for attempts  normalize relations, even if the message was internal.The strange thing is that (Maduro) does not need the 'threat of imperialism' to hold the country together, because Chavista base supports it. This is a bad sign of things might happen in the future. If the reaction is to blame the U.S.  for bad things happening in the country, I don't think there is much hope for improving ties."
