Así que esta visita "va más en el sentido de enfatizar la importancia de las relaciones bilaterales para expandirlas hacia otras áreas de cooperación como educación, ciencia y tecnología, más allá del comercio", dijo a la AFP Cynthia Arnson, directora del programa de América Latina del Wilson Center, un centro de estudios en Washington.

Los mandatarios avanzaron en la inclusión de Chile al programa estadounidense de exención de visas de turistas, que podría hacerse efectivo en 2014, luego de que Santiago realice mejoras de seguridad a los pasaportes chilenos.

Además conversaron sobre la posibilidad de que Chile importe en un futuro gas natural de Estados Unidos, una alternativa que, según Piñera, resultaría más económica y limpia al sustituir la energía con base en carbón.

En Washington, Piñera se reunió con la directora del Fondo Monetario Internacional (FMI), Christine Lagarde, el presidente del Banco Mundial, Jim Yong Kim, y visitó el Departamento de Estado, donde se entrevistó con el jefe de la diplomacia estadounidense, John Kerry.
