Lessons from the Summer of Snowden

The Hard Road Back to Trust

Oct 22, 2013

“Lessons from the Summer of Snowden: The Hard Road Back to Trust,” a joint policy paper by former Wilson Center Public Policy Scholar Georg Mascolo, and Ben Scott, Senior Advisor at the New America Foundation, discusses the necessity of a political solution that resolves US and European disputes over NSA surveillance programs. The article offers a comprehensive account of US intelligence practices in post-9/11 world and the resulting disconnect between expectations of personal privacy and the logic of mass surveillance technologies. According to Mascolo and Scott, the U.S. and Europe need to come up with a "path forward towards an international standard that can realign both governments and publics around a trusted regime that balances liberty and security in the digital world."
