Publications

  • “The State of Security in the U.S.-Mexico Border Region”

"The State of Security in the U.S.-Mexico Border Region," is a new working paper by the Border Research Partnership, and will be a chapter in the forthcoming "State of the Border Report." This working paper looks at some of the many security concerns along the U.S. border, among them global terrorism, spillover violence from Mexico, and undocumented immigration.

  • August 8th: The Trans-Pacific Partnership and the Future of International Trade

As the major trade initiative of the Obama Administration, the Trans-Pacific Partnership will broaden trade in the Pacific and may create a template for future, global trade negotiations.

  • August 16th: Under pressure “from above”? Human rights violations by the military and civilian law enforcement in Mexico

The Mexico Institute held an event about "Under pressure 'from above?' Violations of human rights in the struggle against drugs in Mexico," a lecture with Professor Alejandro Anaya, Wilson Center Public Policy Scholar & Academic Coordinator Center for Research and Teaching in Economics (CIDE) Aguascalientes Campus and comments by Maureen Meyer, Senior Associate, Washington Office on Latin America, and Santiago Canton, Director, RFK Partners for Human Rights.

  • August 28th: The Future of U.S.-Mexico Relations (at the Republican National Convention)

The Annenberg Retreat at Sunnylands and The Woodrow Wilson Center joined co-hosts Mel Martinez, former United States Senator from Florida and House Rules Committee Chairman David Dreier (R-CA) for a discussion on policy options for the Future of U.S.-Mexico Relations. **Please note, this event was held in Tampa, FL at the Republican National Convention.

  • August 16th: “Four big ways Mexico is boosting the U.S. economy,” Univision News.

This blog article highlights a report by Christopher Wilson, an Associate of the Mexico Institute. The report shows that increased trade and investment between the U.S. and Mexico since the implementation of NAFTA has created a virtuous cycle which benefits workers and companies on both sides of the border.

  • August 24th:U.S. and Mexican mayors meet in San Diego,"  San Diego Union Tribune.

A group of border mayors who met in San Diego on Friday called for nontraditional financing, including public-private partnerships, to build badly needed border crossings in the face of limited federal funding. The Mexico Institute's Andrew Selee comments.

  • August 28th: “Americans Shot in Mexico Were C.I.A Operatives Aiding in Drug War” The New York Times.

The two Americans who were wounded when gunmen fired on an American Embassy vehicle last week were Central Intelligence Agency employees sent as part of a multiagency effort to bolster Mexican efforts to fight drug traffickers, officials said on Tuesday...The Mexico Institute's Eric L. Olson comments.
