Pew: God Essential to Morality for Many in Middle East

Roughly seven-in-ten or more in six Middle East countries think belief in God is essential to morality, according to a new Pew Research Center study. More than 90 percent of those surveyed in Egypt in Jordan agree.

      Roughly seven-in-ten or more in six Middle East countries think belief in God is essential to morality, according to a new Pew Research Center study. More than 90 percent of those surveyed in Egypt in Jordan agree. The study was conducted among 40,080 people in 40 countries between 2011 and 2013, including Egypt, Jordan, Turkey, the Palestinian Territories, Tunisia and Lebanon. Pew found that “publics in richer nations tend to place less emphasis on the need to believe in God to have good values than people in poorer countries do.” But the United States and China stand out as clear exceptions.
