SEPA Upgraded to Ministry of the Environment

Mar 17, 2008

During last weeks National People's Congress meeting, the State Environmental Protection Administration (SEPA) of China was elevated to ministerial status, not the Ministry of Environment (MEP). The Ministry of Health was also given the authority to oversee food and drug safety. Other ministries were streamlined or combined, reducing the total number of ministries by one. However, no clear emphasis on energy has emerged as MEP does not cover energy issues and there continues to be no ministry of energy.
