For a young Canadian general, Romeo Dallaire's assignment as commander of the U.N. peacekeeping force in Rwanda in 1994 was a heady opportunity. Animated by humanitarian ideals and a belief in the international system, he went forth with energy, enthusiasm, and expectations of success. Soon his hopeful confidence was shattered. The brutality, cynicism, corruption and disinterest he saw doomed the mission and left him with regret and suicidal despair. This is his story.
