WASHINGTON—The Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars mourns the death of Robert Mosbacher, former U.S. secretary of commerce and former member of the Wilson Center's Board of Trustees. Mosbacher passed away on January 24.

After making his mark drilling natural gas wells in Texas, Louisiana, Montana, and western Canada, Mosbacher became a political adviser to George H.W. Bush. He then worked to increase ties between government and industry as secretary of commerce. Mosbacher also served as vice chairman of the Wilson Center's Board of Trustees from 1982 to 1988. His time spent on the Board of Trustees helped to advance the values of the organization.

"Robert Mosbacher was an engaged, passionate, and vital member of the Wilson Center Board, and the Center is a better place today because of his contributions," said Wilson Center President and Director Lee Hamilton. "He will be deeply missed. I offer my deepest sympathies to his family."

Mosbacher received the Woodrow Wilson Award for Public Service in 2002, commemorating his service in public office and his commitment to scholarship and discourse. He also was an avid sailor and won several awards, from the 1958 Clifford D. Mallory Cup to the men's North American championship.
