WPSP Delegate Lamaan Sabri Mejlli Appointed as Adviser to the Deputy Prime Minister in Iraq

A delegate from the Women in Public Service Project (WPSP) at the Global Women's Leadership Initiative (GWLI), Lamaan Sabri Mejlli, was recently appointed as the adviser to the Deputy Prime Minister in Iraq. This is an honor that not many young women of her age will have the chance to experience.

Previously, Lamaan Sabri Mejlli worked as a Chief Mechanical Engineer at the Ministry of Electricity in Iraq and was selected to be a member in the general inspector office of the ministry. Aside from her work, Lamaan is an active volunteer in the community at Handicap International and the Iraqi Red Crescent. She entered the political realm as a General Secretariat Member and is also responsible for the Department of Women Affairs, which enhances the performance of Iraqi women in political parties. After her run for office, she managed to personally get the position of the Spokesman of the Party in 2009 and was elected Assistant Secretary General of the party in 2010.

Lamaan attended the WPSP Learning Institute at Wellesley College in June, 2012. This Institute brought together 50 emerging women leaders from across the globe between the ages of 25-45 who were already serving in different fields of public service and/or political or elected office. The Institute provided a forum for shared learning and dialogue; exchange of experiences and expertise; peer-to-peer mentoring and networking; and built an important platform for cross-fertilization of knowledge and innovative leadership skills. Similar leadership training institutes will be held periodically at the WPSP partner institutions.
