Family Planning, Conservation, and Gorillas? Connecting the Dots Through an Integrated Approach in Africa

Can the interests of humans in need of food, homes, and jobs be balanced with the habitat needs of endangered wildlife? This is a challenge throughout the world and too often identifying the conflict is much easier than finding solutions. Gladys Kalema-Zikusoka, called “the African Vet” by the BBC, is leading an integrated approach inspired by her early work with mountain gorillas. It holds promise for addressing the spread of diseases and also for slowing population growth. She explains how improving the lives of gorillas can have benefits for neighboring communities as well.
