Both men were interested in China as a lever against North Korea but Nixon came to understand the exceptional strategic import of U.S. – China ties. The relationship he began to forge fell under the stewardship of five succeeding Presidents with varying results. Today the challenge of the relationship is as big as ever and Taiwan remains at its center.
