Maintaining maritime security order is vital for peace in the Asia-Pacific region, yet tensions in the region continue to grow. Maintaining maritime security order is vital for peace in the Asia-Pacific region, yet tensions in the region continue to grow. At the same time, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is looking to make changes in the nation’s security policy which will determine the future of the U.S.-Japan alliance and more broadly, the maritime security order in the Asia-Pacific region.

How the Japan-U.S. alliance can help maintain a maritime security environment favorable to both nations, and what the security challenges for Japan and the United States for bilateral and international relations will be discussed. In addition, implications of the ongoing national security discussion in Japan and China’s recent domestic situation on the alliance will be addressed.
