Questions of political economy, defense strategy, and bilateral relations have dominated the recent analysis of China’s relationship with Latin America.   Yet a wide range of “new” interactions are also important to consider:  transnational flows of capital and people, adaptation and learning in industrial production chains and the mining sector, the fluidity of perceptions between China and Latin America, stereotypes and “othering” of Latin America within China, and what the changing assumptions of China’s top leadership mean for the China-Latin America relationship.

We were joined for a discussion of the new book, From the Great Wall to the New World: China and Latin America in the 21st Century (Cambridge University Press) by co-editors:

Ariel Armony, Center for Latin American Studies, University of Miami

Julia Strauss, Department of Politics and International Studies, University of London

With commentary by

Mauricio Mesquita Moreira, Principal Economist, Trade and Integration Sector, Inter-American Development Bank

Wei Hongxia (Victoria), Visiting Scholar, Asia Program, Carnegie Endowment for International Peace
