Internships @ The Wilson Center
Wilson Center Library Internships
Library
The Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars’ library offers internships for students with an interest in coursework related to library science. The library at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars supports the Center’s scholars and programs with its print and electronic collections. The collection is particularly strong in history, economics, international relations, political science, and regional studies. The Woodrow Wilson Center is a presidential memorial, established by Congress in 1968, that aims to link the world of ideas and the world of policy-making.
The Center is looking for two interns who would like to make a substantive contribution to our library. These opportunities are unpaid and preferably would be for 12-15 hours per week and will last for a mutually agreed upon time. These internships are designed to provide the individuals selected with the opportunity for practical experience in an environment that successfully mixes academic study with relevant work experience. Internships also provide opportunities to attend events within the Wilson Center and around Washington.
1. The library implemented its first online catalog in the autumn of 2005. Omissions and errors from the retrospective conversion of the bibliographic data still need to be identified and remedied. We will also be entering our remaining serial and standing order records and have copy cataloging to be done of a collection of donated books. This would be an ideal project for someone with some experience in cataloging and ILS systems who likes to trouble-shoot and who can help us fine-tune our new system. The library also maintains a bibliography of its archive of Wilson Center publications. The intern would update this bibliography by collecting materials and entering them. This is an opportunity to learn about the activities of the Wilson Center through the publications of its programs and scholars.
2. The library has a large Slavic collection, more than half of which is in Russian. We need to identify omissions and errors from the retrospective conversion of data. As with the first position, this would be an ideal project for someone with some experience in cataloging and ILS systems who likes to trouble-shoot and who can help us fine-tune our new system. We have two other ongoing projects: review of donated books for suitability followed by copy cataloging; and, the maintenance and expansion of a vertical file project containing reports, documents, conference proceedings, pamphlets and other miscellaneous publications pertaining to Russia and the other successor states. We are seeking someone who reads Russian.
