A Briefing on Burundi

On January 16, Fabien Nsengimana, director of the Burundi Leadership Training Program (BLTP), and Africa Program Director Howard Wolpe briefed an audience on current sociopolitical conditions in Burundi and ways the BLTP has helped facilitate the Burundian peace process. Launched by the Africa Program, the BLTP is a major capacity-building initiative that trains leaders from belligerent parties in basic communication, negotiation, and decision-making skills. Nsengimana highlighted the role of leadership training in the Burundian conflict’s progression from armed confrontation to eventual democratic elections and partial reconciliation. Participants cautioned the most significant challenge to resolve is transforming the attitudinal changes achieved at the individual leadership level into larger sociopolitical change amongst the population.
