Event Summary

The Africa Program of the Wilson Center and the International Center for Transitional Justice (ICTJ) are pleased to invite you to a presentation of the report, "Living with Fear: A Population-Based Survey on Attitudes about Peace, Justice and Social Reconstruction in Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo," written in conjunction with the Berkeley-Tulane Initiative on Vulnerable Populations. This report, which will launch on August 19 with the Central Africa Policy Forum in New York, presents the results of an opinion poll conducted in Ituri and North and South Kivu as well as in Kinshasa and Kisangani. The survey sought to measure the population’s exposure to violence, understand the priorities and needs of civilians affected by ongoing violence, and capture attitudes about peace, social reconstruction, and transitional justice mechanisms.

Mirna Adjami is a human rights lawyer with a particular focus on francophone Central Africa. She has extensive experience working in the DRC, training Congolese lawyers and non-governmental organizations in international human rights and humanitarian law with Global Rights based in Kinshasa, and monitored the 2006 elections with the Carter Center. She has also served as a legal officer with the Open Society Justice Initiative.

Suliman Baldo has worked extensively in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Ethiopia, Eritrea, and the Sudan. He has worked as a lecturer at the University of Khartoum and as a Field Director for Oxfam America, covering Sudan and the Horn of Africa. He also worked as a senior researcher in the Africa division of Human Rights Watch and has served as Director of the Africa program at the International Crisis Group.

Patrick Vinck directs the Berkeley-Tulane Initiative for Vulnerable Populations conducting research in countries experiencing serious violations of human rights and international humanitarian law.
