2009 Africa Summer Research Internships at the Woodrow Wilson Center

The Africa Program is seeking qualified applicants for its 2009 Africa Summer Research Internship program in Washington, DC. Interns will assist the Summer Africanist Doctoral Fellows in their research projects and preparation of Africa-related dissertations.

Internship Description
Interns will be assigned to work directly with an advanced graduate student working on Africa-related issues. Duties will include:

  • Searching for source material at area institutions and online sources;
  • Analyzing, summarizing and filing research materials;
  • Proofreading and editing written work;
  • Translating key documents from languages of expertise;
  • Office and clerical support.
All interns at the Wilson Center are also encouraged to participate in our many panel discussions, conferences and other meetings outside of their Africa Program responsibilities. A variety of events are regularly available in regional studies and functional issues like conflict resolution, women in conflict, environmental issues, international security issues, Congress, foresight and governance. All interns also receive access to the Wilson Center’s substantial research resources.

Eligibility Requirements
This internship is open students currently enrolled in a four-year undergraduate institution. Interns should have an interest in Africa, preferably with some academic or experiential background in the continent. He/she should have basic computer skills on a variety of software platforms. Good research skills and an enthusiastic and responsible approach to unsupervised work are strong assets.

Foreign students are eligible, but they must hold a valid F-1 or J-1 visa and appropriate work authorization. The Wilson Center does not sponsor visas. Foreign students must obtain written permission from their Responsible Visa Officer at their university stating their ability to intern at the Wilson Center.

This internship is paid.

Internship Dates: June – August 2009

Deadline for Summer 2009: March 15, 2009
