The International Watersheds Initiative: Implementing a New Paradigm for Transboundary Basins
The International Watershed Initiative (IWI) was created on the premise that water resources and environmental problems can be anticipated, prevented, or resolved at the local level. At a conference hosted by the Canada Institute and the Environmental Change and Security Program, Chuck Lawson and Willem Brakel of the International Joint Commission (IJC) discussed the findings of the IJC’s Third Report to Governments on the International Watershed Initiative.

Building Together: Planning and Partnership for Health Care, the Environment, and the Economy
Jack Layton, leader of Canada’s New Democratic Party (NDP), discussed ways for progressive leaders in the United States and Canada to work together to address the major issues facing middle-class families across North America. At the event, hosted by the Canada Institute, he explained how universal health care coverage in the United States would benefit the U.S. economy and improve the quality of life of millions of Americans.

Oil Security and Friendly Suppliers: Where Are We Now?
A panel of experts assessed the potential effects of the United States and Canada shifting North American oil supplies in light of Mexico’s projected decline in oil production. At the conference, hosted by the Wilson Center’s Canada, Mexico, and Brazil Institutes, they also examined the prospects of Brazil emerging as a major oil supplier.

Canada Institute 2009 Awards Dinner in Toronto
The Canada Institute hosted the 2009 Woodrow Wilson Awards dinner in Toronto on March 2nd. The event honored AIDS activist and former politician Stephen Lewis for public service and Manulife CEO Dominic D’Alessandro for corporate citizenship. The Globe and Mail’s Patricia Best gave an amusing report in her March 11, 2009 “Nobody’s Business” column.
