Woodrow Wilson Center and The Washington Post Fellowship for Latin American Journalists

The Washington Post and the Woodrow Wilson Center are pleased to announce the continuation and expansion of their program in support of print and on line journalists from Latin America and Caribbean nations. The fellowship provides an opportunity to conduct three weeks of reporting concerning hemispheric relations on an issue of importance to journalists’ home countries. The fellowship works as an immersion program in the political culture of the U.S. capital. Five journalists from the region will have the unique opportunity to develop sources of information, enter into direct contact with public and private institutions and experience in situ how Washington operates.

This year’s fellowship program builds upon the success of the pilot program launched in 2008. A year ago, the first group of winners from Brazil, Colombia, and Mexico conducted two weeks of investigative work, working from the newsroom of The Washington Post. Their articles were published in the journalists’ home media, and The Post’s and Woodrow Wilson Center’s web pages on October 29, 2008.

We are pleased to be able to expand the call for applications to journalists from all of Latin America and the Caribbean and to add one more week to their stay in Washington. The three-week fellowship includes travel and lodging costs, plus a weekly living-expense stipend. Fellows will be given a desk in the newsroom of The Washington Post and access to the newspaper’s reporters, editors and research staff. The convening institutions will develop a small number of structured activities during the journalists’ stay to give them exposure to newsworthy issues and key actors in the policy community. It is a requirement that the employer of the grantee keep him or her on payroll during the period of the fellowship.

A successful proposal would seek to break new ground on issues of local, national or regional importance in Latin America and the Caribbean or in its relationship with the U.S. A goal is to produce completed works for publication in the fellow’s media and in their native language and on washingtonpost.com.
