Dear Friends of NKIDP,
Since March 2007, the mission of the North Korea International Documentation Project (NKIDP) has been to shed light on the history of North Korea's inner workings and foreign relations using newly declassified documents from the archives of North Korea's former communist allies. The goal is to provide present-day policymakers with the background they need to make informed decisions about policy towards the DPRK.
We hope that you will consider making a tax-deductible donation to NKIDP so that our project can continue to grow. We have had a very busy year. In 2008, NKIDP:
* assembled the world's largest collection of DPRK-related archival documents (presently exceeding 50,000 pages), with materials from Russian, (East) German, Czech, Polish, Romanian, Albanian, Hungarian, and Chinese archives;
* launched a multi-year critical oral history project which seeks to fill in the gaps in the documentary record through the involvement of veteran policymakers from the United States, South Korea, and the former Communist Bloc;
* published NKIDP Working Papers, e-Dossiers, and sections in the Cold War International History Project Bulletin;
* expanded partnerships with the University of North Korean Studies (Seoul) and other international partners;
* served as host to several high-level current and former government officials from the ROK, including Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Song Min-soon, Chairman of the Presidential Committee on Northeast Asian Cooperation Initiative, Lee Soo-Hoon, and former Minister of Unification Park Jae-Kyu.
At present, of the over 50,000 pages of documents in NKIDP’s collection, only about 1% has been translated. We need your support to accomplish our ambitious goal of making all of our materials available for download free of charge on our Virtual Archive. While we do receive funding from foundation grants, these make up only a portion of our total operating budget. The balance comes from generous donors like you.
