Mexico Institute Re-Launches Mérida Initiative Portal, a Public Resource on U.S.-Mexico Security Cooperation
The Mexico Institute at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars announced today the re-launch of its Mérida Initiative web portal (www.wilsoncenter.org/merida), a resource for researchers, journalists, policymakers, and the general public on the most significant bi-national security cooperation program ever undertaken between Mexico and the United States.

Winners of Journalism Fellowship Announced
We are pleased to announce this year’s group of winners of the 2009 Woodrow Wilson Center-Washington Post Fellowship for Latin American Journalists. The fellowship provides an opportunity to conduct three weeks of reporting concerning hemispheric relations on an issue of importance to journalists’ home countries, and works as an immersion program in the political culture of the U.S. capital.

The Mexico Institute of the Latin American Program at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars seeks an intern each semester with an interest in, coursework related to, and/or experience working on Mexico. Oil Security and Friendly Suppliers: Where Are We Now?
A panel of experts assessed the potential effects of the United States and Canada shifting North American oil supplies in light of Mexico’s projected decline in oil production. At the conference, hosted by the Wilson Center’s Canada, Mexico, and Brazil Institutes, they also examined the prospects of Brazil emerging as a major oil supplier.

Influenza Outbreak in the Americas
International efforts to contain the H1N1 influenza are commendable, said experts at an event sponsored by the Mexico Institute and the Global Health Initiative. However, the panel warned that the upcoming flu season in the Southern Hemisphere could bring a second, perhaps more dangerous, round of infections.

Mexico Public Policy Scholars Program Announcement
The Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars and the Mexican Council on Foreign Relations are pleased to announce this year’s Mexico Scholars Program. Successful applicants will have the option of spending two months this summer (June 29 –August 28, 2009) or four months this fall (September 8-December 24, 2008) in residence at the Woodrow Wilson Center in the heart of Washington, D.C., where they will carry out advanced, policy-oriented research and writing designed to bridge the gap between the academic and policy communities. The application deadline is May 1, 2009.

Combating Organized Crime in Mexico and Latin America
Organized crime in Mexico has caused an estimated 11,000 deaths between 2005 and 2008. To draw lessons on dealing with crime and drug trafficking from the experiences of other countries, the Latin American Program sponsored the conference, "International Efforts to Combat Organized Crime."
