Based on newly-available archival material from Chinese sources, this latest addition to the NPIHP Working Paper series explores the relationship between Soviet Union and China during the 1950s and 1960s as the latter sought to establish their atomic industry and develop a nuclear weapon with Soviet scientific and technological assistance.

“The fact that we have talked about Cuba so much demonstrates that this is a problem of the United States”, said Insulza during a conference at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars. “Is it worth keeping an artificial situation for the rest of the countries in the region, and indeed, defend a policy that has had no success in 50 years?”, he questioned in relation to the trade embargo that Washington imposed on the communist island in 1962.
