From April 23 to 25, Wilson Center President Jane Harman was in Seoul, South Korea, at the invitation of Kyungnam University, which awarded her an honorary doctorate. While there, she met with Prime Minister Kim Hwang-Sik, Chairwoman of the Saenuri Party, Park Geun-hye, and Foreign Minister Kim Sung-Hwan.

An article published by Yonhap News on December 26, 2011 citied NKIDP e-Dossier No. 4, “The Rise of Kim Jong Il - Evidence from East German Archives,” which featured East German archival documents on the succession of Kim Jong Il in the 1970s uncovered for NKIDP by Cold War International History Project Senior Scholar Bernd Schaefer.

NKIDP senior adviser and Ohio State University Associate Professor of History Mitchell Lerner’s working paper “Mostly Propaganda in Nature: Kim Il Sung, the Juche ideology, and the Second Korean War” was recently cited in an article on Asia Times Online. The article, authored by NKIDP research assistant Yong Kwon, highlights the relevance of North Korea’s military provocations in 1968 for understanding the prospects for North Korea in the post-Kim Jong Il era.

A newly released Romanian document indicates that North Korea dispatched personnel to Vietnam to carry out psychological warfare against the nearly 313,000 South Korean troops sent to fight against the North Vietnamese between 1965 and 1973.
