The Freiburg Institute for Advanced Studies (FRIAS), in cooperation with Cambridge University and the "Germany and the World in the Age of Glibalization" project, are pleased to announce a workshop to discuss current research on Cold War Germany from various thematic perspectives and to raise new questions on the societal impact of this global conflict. The workshop will be held at the FRIAS School of History in Germany from 19 September 2012 to 21 September 2012.

Love and Marriage in North Korea – Professor Kathy Moon, formerly a Wilson Center Asian Policy Scholar, fills in the blanks about North Korea’s new First Lady, and reminds us that in the DPRK, romance and politics are inseparable. Dr. Moon is professor of political science and director of East Asian Studies at Wellesley College.

The Wilson Center's European Studies Program is now accepting applications for the EES Short-term Grant competition, which is open to academic experts and practitioners, including advanced graduate students, engaged in specialized research requiring access to Washington, DC and its research institutions. Grants are for one month and do not include residence at the Wilson Center. Candidates must be U.S. citizens, in order to be considered eligible for this grant opportunity. The deadline for this grant cycle is: September 1, 2012.

European Studies is pleased to welcome Title VIII-supported summer research scholar Costica Bradatan - Associate Professor in the Honors College at Texas Tech University. Bradatan’s research at the Center aims to illustrate how the concept of “dying for an idea” has the potential to shape intellectual history and the dissemination of knowledge.

European Studies is pleased to welcome Public Policy Scholar Terri Givens. Givens is an associate professor in the Department of Government at the University of Texas at Austin, and the author of several books on immigration policy, European politics and security, including Voting Radical Right in Western Europe and the Immigrant Politics: Race and Representation in Western Europe. Givens is currently working on a project titled “The Politics of Immigration Policy: Discourses and Denial.”

The European Studies program is now accepting applications for its Junior Scholars' Training Seminar - a scholarship opportunity for graduate students (MA and above) working towards a degree in the social sciences and humanities with a regional focus on Central and Eastern Europe, including the Baltic states. The application deadline has been extended until May 18, 2012.
