Adam Michnik, Editor-in-Chief of Poland's daily newspaper Gazeta Wyborcza and recipient of the 2009 Ion Ratiu Democracy Award, was featured in a number of distinguished press publications. Michnik's speech Democracy: Traps and Question Marks marked the 5th annual Ion Ratiu Democracy Lecture, which took place at the Wilson Center on December 3, 2009. His address was preceded by a brief introduction by The Honorable Zbigniew Brzezinski, former National Security Advisor to President Carter.
From the Indian Bomb to the Establishment of the First Brazil-Argentina Nuclear Agreement (1974-1980)
India’s first nuclear explosive test in May 1974 had deep consequences for the nuclear non-proliferation regime. The establishment of the Nuclear Suppliers Group in 1975 added to the safeguards requirements that were imposed on countries seeking nuclear technology—even those that were outside the NPT. This tightening of the nuclear technology transfer regime as a result of India’s 1974 test would have a considerable effect on the Brazilian and Argentine programs.
NPIHP’s partners at the Institute for Defence Studies and Analyses and the Indian Pugwash Society will host a lecture on "The Evolution of India’s Nuclear Program: Reminisces of the Early Years" with prominent physicist and nuclear policy advisor Prof. M.G.K. Menon, former chairman of the Indian Space Research Organization, and former director of the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research.

North Korea recently hinted that it would be interested in co-hosting the 2018 Olympics with Pyeongchang, South Korea. Though the organizing committee for Pyeongchang rejected the idea as unrealistic, the North’s proposal is not without precedent, as documents obtained by the North Korea International Documentation Project demonstrate.
