Project Summary

Breaking linguistic and cultural barriers, this study brings to light and consolidates materials on the music of the medieval Russian church. Focuses on a manuscript type liturgy (kondakar) and the paleographical problems presented by its musical notation. Examines historical and cultural factors that shaped the musical traditions and practices following Russia’s conversion to Christianity in the 10th century, to the liturgical reforms introduced at the end of the 14th century.
