Project Summary
This project seeks to reconstruct diplomatic relations during the 1830s-1860s, a period of time characterized by antagonism despite their internal similarities. Liberal European public opinion held that America was an democratic citadel and Russia was the autocratic stronghold. This project determines how relations between the countries and peoples were constructed and their solutions to ethnic nationalism within a multi-ethnic society by a reconstruction of the internal debates.
