Project Summary

A study of informal netowrks and professional values at work in the USSR Academy of Sciences before the Gorbachev regime. Analyzes the dual structure of Soviet science in the coexistence of official bureaucratic procedures and unofficial patters of professional collaboration as well as in the mixture of traditional Soviet values and the professional ethic of the international scientific community. A sociological study of science in the context of the Soviet area studies. Finds that Soviet scientific intelligentsia has developed social base for Gorbachev’s reform program.
