Project Summary

An examination of extortion practices in Russia. Develops analysis based on the notion of an extortable market that a criminal organization controls as a cartel for the purpose of rent extraction. Identifies the socio-economic conditions that promote extortion, to provide information on the nature, locus and extent of social costs of extortion, and to offer specific policies that can mitigate these costs.
