Wilson Center Project(s):
The Demographics of Transition: Fertility, Mortality, and Migration in the Transition States of Europe and Asia

Project Summary

demographic changes that have occurred during the 1990s in the formerly planned states of the former Soviet Union and Eastern Europe. In nearly all of these states fertility has plummeted to levels never recorded before, mortality has risen sharply, and the reconfiguration of borders and economic transition has caused massive migration flows among and within these states. The importance of these trends beyond the field of demography are significant, impacting nearly all areas of the societies and economies of the transition states, now and well into the future
