David R. Mares is professor of political science at the University of California, San Diego. He received his Ph.D. from Harvard University and was previously a professor at El Colegio de Mexico. He has held visiting appointments at the University of Southern California, Universidad de Chile and FLACSO-Ecuador. He recently edited Civil-Military Relations: Building Regional Security and Democracy in Latin America, Southern Asia and Central Europe and Columbia University Press will publish Violent Peace: Explaining the Use of Force in Latin America. Professor Mares has published numerous articles and chapters on Latin America in English, Spanish, French, and Chinese.
