Berlin Center for Cold War Studies / Berliner Kolleg Kalter Krieg

Location: Berlin, Germany
Closing Date: October 20, 2014

In spring 2015 the Berlin Center for Cold War Studies (Berliner Kolleg Kalter Krieg) will commence its work. The Center is a joint project of the Hamburg Institute for Social Research, the Institute for Contemporary History Munich – Berlin, the Federal Foundation for the Reappraisal of the SED-Dictatorship and the Humboldt University of Berlin. It will be a place of international scholarship and academic exchange about the Cold War. It will seek to enrich historical research on this time period by promoting the evolution of relevant issues and theoretical concepts in a dialogue with the academic community and by nurturing new generations of researchers. Also, geographically located at a focal point of the Cold War, the Center will bring scholarly debates and important new findings that affect our present-day lives closer to the interested public.

Work at the Berlin Center for Cold War Studies will concentrate on six subject areas / research approaches:

  • International and inter-German relations
  • Perceiving and handling conflict
  • Mobilizing and curbing emotions and visions of the enemy
  • Transformation of societies
  • Producing and organizing knowledge
  • The politics and culture of memory

For the first academic year (Oct. 1, 2015 to Sept. 30, 2016) the Center will award two postdoctoral fellowships to emerging scholars in the field of Cold War history.

Fellows will be granted the opportunity in Berlin to launch or complete a major research project and, if needed, to conduct research in German and Berlin archives. All applicants should be willing to cooperate with specialist colleagues from the participating institutions (Hamburg Institute for Social Research, Institute for Contemporary History Munich – Berlin, the Federal Foundation for the Reappraisal of the SED-Dictatorship, Humboldt University of Berlin). Fellows are also expected during their stay in Berlin to give a public lecture on their topic and to prepare the content for a non-public conference on an issue related to their project.

Fellowship Benefits

Fellowships carry a monthly award of € 2,200.00. If required, a monthly allowance of € 400.00 is added for family / children.

Fellows must reside in Berlin. An apartment will be provided. Travel costs (air/rail) to arrive in and depart from Berlin will be covered. Also covered are mobility costs for public transportation and visits to archives within Germany totaling a maximum of € 450.00 monthly as well as research costs totaling up to € 100.00 monthly.

The Berlin Center for Cold War Studies assumes that fellows are given leave without pay by their home institutions for the duration of the fellowship. The Center explicitly welcomes offers by researchers’ home institutions to participate in financing the stay in Berlin. In this case, details on the manner and amount of possible financing are kindly requested. Institutional affiliation, however, is not a formal prerequisite for an application.
