Jeffrey Wasserstrom, who spoke at our cosponsored January 3 forum "Urban Life in China's Brave New World", published an article in The Nation on January 18 titled "NIMBY [(Not in My Backyard)] Comes to China." The article, which includes a YouTube video, reflects on the recent protests in Shanghai over the potential human health and property value impacts of the extension of the magnetic levitation train. This protest, and similar ones such as last year's Xiamen protest, are unique in China. Instead of focusing on jobs and loss of life, they revolve around potential harm to the health of China's middle-class.

As a timely addition to this dialog on China's environmental protests, CEF's intern Monty McGee produced a media tip sheet on Environmental Protests in China including links to more information on the Shanghai and Xiamen protests, as well as others.
