The Wilson Center’s Latin American Program and the Vidanta Foundation are pleased to announce the winners of the 2019-2020 fellowship competition on “Addressing Environmental Challenges in the Americas.” The awardees are JULIANA TINOCO,  External Relations and Knowledge Manager at Palladium Group; and GINA KAWAS, Executive Assistant in the Central American Bank for Economic Integration. They will be in residence at the Wilson Center during the summer of 2020.

Ms. Tinoco is a journalist and communications expert in environmental and development issues, focusing on forest conservation. Her project will examine forest preservation in Colombia and her native Brazil, evaluating strategies that strengthen and expand conservation initiatives and address deforestation.  Ms. Kawas will be taking a sabbatical from the Central American Bank for Economic Integration, based in Honduras.

Her project will examine how to improve waste management policies in Tegucigalpa, researching management models for waste and recyclable goods. The fellowship competition attracted applications from 14 countries of Latin America and the Caribbean. Tinoco’s and Kawas’ projects were selected on the basis of potential impact and scalability. 

The Latin American Program and Vidanta Foundation look forward to sharing research results following the two awardees’ residence at the Wilson Center.
