“Legacy of Soviet Dissent for Russia's Post-Soviet Generations”
Many young Russians, whether politically active or indifferent, know little about the dissidents of the Soviet era. They don’t understand what motivated people of the time to speak out, why some dissidents decided to leave the country, or what was the significance of samizdat, the “self-published” writings and poetry that people passed around in secret at the time. The Voice of America launched a documentary series in 2013 featuring interviews, documents, and narration to tell the stories from this part of Russian history.

They don’t understand what motivated people of the time to speak out, why some dissidents decided to leave the country, or what was the significance of samizdat, the “self-published” writings and poetry that people passed around in secret at the time. The Voice of America launched a documentary series in 2013 featuring interviews, documents, and narration to tell the stories from this part of Russian history
The series is produced in collaboration with the Sakharov Foundation (USA), and narrated for the VOA by Natella Boltyanskaya, a prominent Russian poet, journalist and program host at Radio Ekho Moskvy. Since the series launch, there have been over 500,000 views of the videos in the series across all VOA platforms, primarily in Russia and Ukraine. The series is made possible thanks to generous support from Oak Foundation based in UK, member of the US-based Council of Foundations.
The panelists discussed VOA activities in Russia, and described in particular the motivation for producing this series on dissidents and the envisioned impact on young generations of Russians. A sample video from the series was shown.
