Overview

The new HBO miniseries “Chernobyl” dramatizes the 1986 nuclear accident, telling the story of the men and women who made sacrifices to save Europe from the disaster while battling a culture of disinformation.

The Kennan Institute hosted a screening of the first episode of “Chernobyl,” followed by a conversation with writer, creator, and executive producer Craig Mazin. Mazin began researching the environmental disaster in 2014 and interviewed nuclear scientists to learn about reactors as well as former Soviet citizens to better understand the culture in 1986.  He described his process and the making of the miniseries, an HBO/Sky co-production starring Jared Harris, Stellan Skarsgård and Emily Watson, and directed by Johan Renck.
