Elections in Belarus: Is a Real Transition in Progress?
On September 11th 2016, parliamentary elections were held in Belarus and, for the first time in 12 years, opposition politicians won seats. In a political system known for monolithic control, this represents progress, but how much? Mr. Kent Härstedt, who led the short-term OSCE observer mission to Belarus, noted “It remains clear that Belarus still has some way to go to fulfill its democratic commitments.” He will elaborate on what improved this year, and what remains to be done.
