Sudans Working Group: Private Discussion with Ambassador Thomas Hushek, U.S. Ambassador to the Republic of South Sudan

Sudans Working Group

The Wilson Center Africa Program’s Sudans Working Group met on December 5, 2019 for a private discussion with Ambassador Thomas Hushek, U.S. Ambassador to the Republic of South Sudan. Ambassador Alan Goulty, former United Kingdom Ambassador to Sudan, Africa Program Global Fellow, and Co-Chair of the Sudans Working Group, moderated the discussion. The roundtable included representatives from the government, NGOs, and academic sectors from the United States. The discussion focused on U.S. policy toward South Sudan, particularly with regard to developments with the 2018 revitalized peace agreement. Participants voiced their concerns over delayed implementation of key parts of the agreement, including the delay in forming the Transitional Government of National Unity (TGNU). They also spoke about the ongoing conflicts and the challenges facing security sector reforms, the hybrid court, and the return of refugees and state of internally displaced persons. The participants debated critical issues such as managing the power-sharing agreement, prioritizing the needs of South Sudanese citizens, and how to manage the complex environment of various regional and international actors.

Through the Sudans Working Group, the Africa Program provides a platform for engaging U.S., African, and international policymakers and stakeholders in inclusive and forward-leaning dialogue aimed at advancing the prospects for peace, security, and development between and within the Sudans. The Sudans Working Group is co-chaired by Ambassador Alan Goulty and Ambassador Nureldin Satti.

This event was held under the Chatham House rule.
