Turkey’s Troubled Democracy and Foreign Policy
In the aftermath of the 2013 corruption probes, Fatih University scholar Savaş Genç argues, Turkey has taken a sharp turn towards a new era under the leadership of Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Professor Genç will discuss recent political developments, including concerns over the weakening of the rule of law, growing pressure on the judiciary and limits on the freedom of expression under Erdogan’s leadership. One focus will be media freedom which Genç argues has suffered the most as journalists have lost their jobs or been detained and newspapers and TV stations have been raided, raising questions about the future course of Erdogan’s “New Turkey:” Genç will also address Turkey’s foreign policy which faces multiple challenges, from troubled EU and US relations to problems in an increasingly fragile region.
Savaş Genç is an Associate Professor of International Relations at Fatih University in Istanbul. Genç studied at Heidelberg University (Political Science) and received his PhD there.
