U.S.-China Relations: The Stories so Far

The Kissinger Institute hosted a discussion with writer and former Washington Post correspondent John Pomfret on his new book, The Beautiful Country and the Middle Kingdom: America and China, 1776 to the Present.

In his latest work, the author of Chinese Lessons unscrolls the history of mutual influence between the United States and China, highlighting the diplomats, thinkers, warriors, students, actresses, rascals, and revolutionaries who have shaped the two nations’ relationship for good and ill over a quarter millennium. Many of the breakthroughs and illusions Pomfret traces through these stories are relevant today as Beijing and Washington reconsider the goals and benefits of bilateral relations.
