Hardball Trade Tactics Will Leave U.S. Workers Battered and Bruised

A long-time U.S. trade guru joked last week that as a rule of thumb, he favors trying to manage only one trade war at a time, not multiple trade conflicts at once as the U.S. is attempting.

As the danger of costly missteps and negative consequences with international partners becomes more evident, the United States needs a serious debate over the current approach and making course adjustments. The alternative could leave the U.S. trying to recoup after paying the price at home and abroad.

U.S. Auto Proposals Pose Big Challenge for NAFTA Talks

House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) said that he needs a proposed North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) deal in the days ahead if Congress is to vote on it this year. The prospects for meeting that timeframe is unclear.

Getting a NAFTA  deal now would boost North America’s economies, but trade ministers and negotiators from Canada, Mexico and the U.S. remain divided on difficult issues. Ministers have left negotiating teams to work in Washington and remain on call. They focused on rules for auto manufacturing last week.

Arizona Needs to Pay Close Attention to NAFTA Negotiations

Trade negotiators from Mexico, Canada and the United States are in overdrive trying to forge an agreement on an updated NAFTA treaty by mid-May. Trade ministers from the three counties began their latest round of meetings on Monday, to bridge gaps on key issues.

Arizona has an enormous amount at stake: 47 percent of its exports go to Mexico and Canada.

That commerce supports 236,000 Arizona jobs and generates more than $10 billion in exports.

Do-or-Die Time for NAFTA Negotiators

This is a make-or-break time for the NAFTA talks. Trade ministers from the United States, Mexico and Canada started a new round of talks in Washington on May 7.  U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer says he hopes to have an agreement by mid-May, but there is much to resolve in order to meet that goal.

The many millions of stakeholders who will gain from a modern NAFTA need to pay close attention and be ready to urge that this moment of opportunity not be lost in disagreement.

These are make-or-break days, according to senior officials involved in the negotiations to forge an updated North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). The United States, Canada and Mexico are trying to reach agreement on divisive issues over the coming week, hopefully by May 4.

The millions of NAFTA stakeholders should pay close attention and become active advocates, as needed, to help assure that this window of opportunity is not lost in disagreement.

NAFTA April Update: Spring Fever or Fools Rush in?

I have delayed sending out my regular NAFTA update for a couple of weeks because things are changing so quickly that what seemed clear a  month ago is up in the air today. On one hand, I still believe that no one ever made money betting on the swift conclusion of a trade agreement, but on the other hand, I think it’s fair to say that all parties are at least considering options that may result an agreement in principle, an agreement to agree? Such a decision would take place prior to achieving a substantive conclusion to many of the 32 negotiating chapters under consideration.
