Forward Deployed Naval Forces

This week on dialogue, guests Pete Pagano, a captain in the United States Navy and commander of the USS Kearsarge Amphibious Ready Group, and Mark Desens, a colonel in the United States Marine Corps and commander of the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit, discuss their nine month deployment across Southwest Asia, the Middle East, and the Mediterranean.  The Navy Marine Corps team they led completed a wide range of missions including the dramatic rescue of a downed fighter pilot. They join us today to talk about their experiences and the role that forward deployed naval forces play in U.S.

The National Conversation Continues: A Follow Up Discussion with Mr. Y

In the inaugural National Conversation Series held by the Wilson Center in April 2011, the center of discussion was a white paper written by two active-duty military officers, Captain Wayne Porter (U.S. Navy) and Colonel Mark Mykelby (U.S. Marine Corps). The paper, “A National Strategic Narrative”  contends that the United States should move away from such outdated Cold War strategies as containment and deterrence toward sustainable prosperity and civic engagement.

Backdraft: Minimizing Conflict in Climate Change Responses

“What are the conflicts or risks associated with response to climate change?” asked ECSP Director Geoff Dabelko at the Wilson Center on July 18. “How we respond to climate change may or may not contribute to conflict,” he said, but “at the end of the day, we need to do no harm.”
