On Sunday, January 8, supporters of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro stormed Brazil’s Congress, Supreme Court and presidential offices over false claims of electoral fraud, just a week after the inauguration of the country’s new president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. National authorities ultimately restored order and detained more than 1,200 rioters. But the attack has shaken Brazil’s democracy and revealed the depth of the country’s political and social divisions.
