Former History and Public Policy intern Volodymyr Valkov recently co-published an article in Visegrad Insight discussing the foundation and development of Russia’s “new ideology,” tracing its importance in the conflict with Ukraine. Valkov argues that keeping Ukraine divided and unstable comes as part and parcel of Russia’s plan for domination over Europe, and more specifically Eastern Europe.

The Wilson Center’s Kennan Institute launched the Solzhenitsyn Initiative to translate major works by Nobel Laureate Alexandr Solzhenitsyn (1918-2007) for the first time into English. Titles to be translated include The Little Grain, Solzhenitsyn’s autobiography during his years living in the United States, and The Red Wheel, Solzhenitsyn’s partially-translated history of Russia during World War I and leading into the Bolshevik Revolution.

The University of Triest will host a conference on Italy's Nuclear Experience in an International and Comparative Perspective on November 13-15, 2014. This conference proposes to examine the ways in which international politics and economics, technological and scientific exchanges, as well as social and cultural movements, influenced Italian nuclear energy policies, both civilian and military. Furthermore, it seeks to understand how the Italian case compares to other national histories, in Western and Eastern Europe, the U.S., Latin America, Asia and Africa.
