The education apparatus in Mexico plays with the same playbook as it did more than 50 years ago; iron-fisted unions, lack of accountability, poor performance and a central approach to local problems. Education, in general has neglected to innovate and shift the way it is managed. While every other industry has evolved, simplified and increased its productivity; education has remained untouched.
Education in the Wake of Natural Disaster examines the successes and challenges of education reform in Haiti, before and after the earthquake that devastated the nation in 2010. Using two examples of success in systems impacted by natural disasters: post-earthquake Chile and post-Hurricane Katrina New Orleans; Paul Vallas and Tressa Pankovits explore how lessons learned could be adapted and emulated in a country like Haiti that is desperate for reform, with over 50 percent of its population under the age of 18.
On May 1, 2013, the Africa Program and the Project on Leadership and Building State Capacity (Leadership Project) at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars (Wilson Center) sought to highlight some of the exciting developments by women and youth in Africa utilizing technology and social innovations to tackle every day issues. In collaboration with several other Wilson Center programs and the Kenyan-based African Technology Policy Studies Network, The Africa Program and Leadership Project hosted an international conference titled, “African Women and Youth as Agents of Change through Technology and Innovation.”
As the debate over immigration reform has brought the management of the U.S.-Mexico border back into the spotlight, this report provides a comprehensive look at the state of affairs in the management of the U.S.-Mexico border and the border region, focusing on four core areas: trade and competitiveness, security, sustainability, and quality of life. The report suggests that rather than consider each issue individually, the interdependent nature of topics like trade and security demand the border be approached from a more holistic perspective.

The Rabat Conference in November 2012 was hosted by the Moroccan Ministry of the Interior in partnership with the Global Women’s Leadership Initiative at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars and the Wellesley Centers for Women with support from Lynn and Bob Johnston. UN Women, UNDP, and the International Republican Institute provided valuable collaboration. Through this compilation of papers based on discussions at the conference, we celebrate the call for women’s centrality in the constitutional making processes and the negotiation processes involved in strengthening the rule of law in the MENA region.

Shalala, Prof. Erwin Chemerinsky, and Prof. Sara Lawrence-Lightfoot.
