"Federalism in Canada, India and Nigeria: A Comparative Exploration"

Project Summary

Canada, India and Nigeria are contested, but somewhat resilient, ethnoterritorial federations. While Canada and India have been reasonably successful in coping with their deep divisions through largely civil processes, Nigeria is enmeshed ominously in ethnic repression and strife. This project seeks explanation for the contrasting trajectories and outcomes of ethnofederalism in Canada, India and Nigeria through analyses of three factors: cultural cleavage for comparative studies of politics, federalism, ethnicity and development, and for discussions of options for conflict resolution and constitutional reform in ethnically conflictive states.
