Project Summary

Covers the period from Stalin’s death to Khrushchev’s ouster in 1964. Determines the extent to which Khrushchev’s aims in U.S.-Soviet relations, and his way of seeing, understanding and dealing with the US differed from Stalin’s. Reviews the nature and extent of post-Stalinist political change, the determinants of Soviet foreign policy, the dynamics of US-Soviet relations, the meaning of détente, and the hazards of misperception that plague relations.
