Communicating Across Cultures

Feb 19, 2007 to Feb 25, 2007

Lawrence Rosen, William Nelson Cromwell Professor of Anthropology at Princeton University and a Current Fellow of the Woodrow Wilson Center

The need for better understanding and cross-cultural communication between Islamic and non-Islamic cultures is an imperative of our time. This is true of both the search for civic harmony domestically and the need for closer ties internationally. The goal is not easily achieved. Even values and practices that seem similar can have significantly different meanings and history deeply influences interpretation. Dr. Lawrence Rosen explains the pitfalls and possibilities in areas as disparate as neighborhood relations and press freedom.
