Making the American City Work

July 9, 2011

Alexander Garvin is the author of The American City: What Works, What Doesn't.

In 1893 the Chicago World's Fair provided American architecture with a new vision of the city. It was a vision that would inspire a new conception of Washington, D.C. And it is a good example of tried and true principles of design that America can draw upon to revive its cities. Alexander Garvin sets out the principles that should guide urban planners in redesigning our urban areas.
